Our vision for travel: creating meaningful partnerships

At Terra Caribea, every journey begins with a meeting. We design our itineraries in collaboration with the people who live here—those who know their regions down to the finest details and who share a common desire: to welcome travelers and help them discover their beloved country. Our approach is flexible; depending on your needs, we work with nicheservice providers as well as more established tour operators, capable of ensuring a high level of comfort or logistics tailored to larger groups.

In every case, our guiding principle remains the same: to collaborate with partners who care for their environment, their community, and their visitors.

The selection criteria highlighted by Terra Caribea

Our selection philosophy is based on four simple pillars, all of which require a thorough understanding of local realities and constant attention to industry trends. In addition to these criteria, we apply a two-part internal evaluation process:

  • a commercial inspection form, completed by our team, which analyzes the quality, consistency, and reliability of each service provider based on objective criteria;

  • a self-assessment form on responsible practices, completed directly by our partners, to measure their social, environmental, and organizational commitments.

These tools enable us to ensure transparent monitoring, recognize exemplary initiatives, and support our partners in the continuous improvement of their practices.

Local Roots

In Costa Rica, tourism relies heavily on businesses deeply rooted in their local communities—this is one of the country’s strengths: even as some businesses have grown over the years, they often retain a family-run identity, a direct connection to their community, and an in-depth understanding of their surroundings.  Some larger operators, which have become national leaders, are still run by Costa Rican families that have been based here for several generations. Their local roots haven’t disappeared; they’ve grown stronger with experience and the ability to welcome more travelers.

At Terra Caribea, we place great importance on this sense of community. Whether it’s cultural activities, gatherings, finca tours, craft workshops, or community projects, we work with partners whose history is intimately linked to that of the region: independent guides, local cooperatives, and small family-run businesses that pass on knowledge, traditions, or a vision.

Respect for the Environment

Working in a country with a heritage as rich as it is fragile entails a clear responsibility. Terra Caribea has taken a stand by aligning itself with the criteria of the GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council), which define international standards for sustainable tourism, and has obtained Travelife certification. These guidelines shape our decisions and serve as criteria for selecting our partners. Among other things, we evaluate the following:

  • eco-friendly practicesat lodging facilities (reducing plastic use, water treatment, energy efficiency),
  • the ability of service providers to minimize their impact (group size, respect for sensitive areas),
  • their involvement in conservation projects (reforestation, species protection initiatives, educational programs).

Ethical & Social Commitment

In Costa Rica, each region has its own identity, pace, and customs, and we do our best to adapt to and understand each of these realities. Working with responsible partners allows us to support this living heritage and contribute to a form of tourism that benefits the communities that welcome travelers.

We make sure to work with partners who:

  • pay their teams fairly,
  • ensure decent working conditions,
  • value local knowledge, languages, and traditions,
  • support or develop community projects (crafts, sustainable agriculture, social initiatives, education).

Reliability, Quality, and Safety

To ensure a smooth and stress-free trip, we pay close attention to the reliability of our partners, whether they are highly specialized or have larger capacities.

We verify that each partner:

  • holds the necessary licenses, insurance, and authorizations,
  • complies with current safety protocols,
  • maintains consistent quality,
  • is able to adapt to unforeseen weather or logistical challenges.

For accommodations, Terra Caribea also uses an internal classification system that is independent of official categories. We evaluate:

  • the location and its natural or cultural significance,
  • the quality of the facilities,
  • the hospitality and philosophy of the establishment,
  • the level of commitment,
  • the quality of the food,
  • the overall atmosphere,
  • the balance between price and the true value of the experience.

This criteria set allows us to recommendthe most suitable lodging for each person: charm, immersion in nature, comfort, a family-run establishment, a nature observation spot, or a high-end experience. Whether it’s a small local establishment or a more comfortable lodge, we look for the same thing: a reliable, personalized, and safe experience.

What This Means for You

The way we select our partners directly influences your travel experience:

  • You’ll meet local people who sincerely share their knowledge and love of Costa Rica.
  • You’ll enjoy services tailored to your expectations, from niche providers to larger-scale partners.
  • You’ll have access to activities that combine quality, purpose, and respect for the natural environment and local communities.

You travel with peace of mind, knowing that every provider involved in your itinerary has been carefullyselected, supported, and evaluated.

Traveling with Terra Caribea means supporting people who work every day to preserve their land, pass on their knowledge, and welcome visitors with generosity. It also means choosing a trip tailored to you, based on your interests, your pace, and the level of guidance you’re looking for.  And it’s this philosophy that guides every trip we create together with you!
