Alajuela - Dota Copey
First Wine-Tasting Experience in Costa Rica: Copey de Dota!
In the morning, you’ll start the day by picking up your rental car at your hotel.
Then you’ll drive from San José to Copey de Dota.
You’ll drive to Copey de Dota, in the heart of the Los Quetzales Valley, nestled in a mountainous region of the country.
Approximate driving time: 1 hour and a half.
Discover Costa Rica’s first winery:
You’ll visit the first and only commercial winery in Costa Rica and Central America.
Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to taste a piece of history, as this is the first Costa Rican wine not yet available for sale due to its limited and recent production.
You’ll also taste the first and only liqueur made from the uchuva fruit ( physalis), also known as the Golden Berry.
You’ll stroll through this vineyard located in the beautiful mountainous region of Copey de Dota, which features four distinct climates and majestic valleys.
After touring the property with a local guide, you’ll learn about the winemaking process before concluding the tour with a tasting conducted according to all the rules of sommelier etiquette.

Next, you’ll drive fromCopey de Dota to San Gerardo de Rivas.

San Gerardo de Rivas
Today’s itinerary: a visit to a renowned nature reserve and an organic apple farm
A visit to the unassuming but no less impressive Cloudbridge Nature Reserve.
The Cloudbridge Nature Reserve is located along the western edge of Chirripó National Park.
The reserve is part of the largest protected area in Central America, La Amistad International Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also extends into Panama.
Cloudbridge preserves the forests of these parks by connecting Chirripó to the east with other reserves and forested areas to the west. The reserve stretches down the valleys of the Chirripó and Uran rivers, forming a biological corridor for animals such as the quetzal, tapir, puma, jaguar, and many other exotic animals!
This guided tour will take you along a riverside trail to two enormous waterfalls. You’ll explore a lush secondary forest and learn all about the animals and plants you encounter along the way.
Approximate duration: 3 hours; easy hike.
Then, in the afternoon, discover a true family-run apple farm:
Finca Alma 5 is a family-run farm that has been producing more than 10 varieties of temperate-climate fruits since the 1970s. During this visit, you’ll get a glimpse into daily life on the farm. You’ll have the chance to harvest and taste seasonal fruits.
Alma 5 is surrounded by a primary forest consisting mainly of various oak species. You’ll enjoy a short hike during which you can spot various bird species, such as the quetzal, and mountain mammals like the coyote.
At the end of the hike, you’ll help prepare artisanal ice cream made from fruit grown on the finca. This delicious ice cream will be served as dessert with the lunch that follows.

Set out to explore Monteverde and its cloud forest!

To start the day, it’s time for an activity: From Farm to Table
Discover Finca Madre Tierra on a private tour—Costa Rica’s firstcarbon-neutral farm.
During your visit, you’ll have the chance to learn more aboutthe sustainable farming practices used there. You’ll also discover everything the farm produces and the work that goes into growing high-quality food.
