Receiving Travelife certification in October 2025 marks a key milestone in Terra Caribea’s journey toward more responsible tourism in Costa Rica. This international recognition is the culmination of a process of continuous improvement that began in 2022.

A Major Milestone for Terra Caribea

In January 2024, an important first milestone had already been reached with the attainment of Travelife Partnerstatus , a symbol of a concrete and structured commitment. The team continued its process of self-reflection and refinement, further developing its practices within the internal charter, strengthening its methodology, and giving greater meaning to its daily actions.

Behind this approach was a desire to anchor our commitments within a rigorous international framework to ensure transparency and credibility. In a context where the concept of “sustainable tourism” is sometimes overused, we wanted a solid methodological framework to avoid any risk of greenwashing and ensure that every action we take has a genuine impact.

What is Travelife certification?

Travelife is an international sustainability certification program dedicated to the travel industry. Recognized worldwide, it supports travel agencies and tourism service providers in implementing responsible practices at every level: internal management, supplier relationships, product design, and impact on destinations.

Based on more than 200 evaluation criteria, the Travelife methodology provides a structured framework for measuring, planning, and improving the impact of our activities: More than just a label, it is a tool that encourages companies to move step by step toward more sustainable and transparent management.

Our Concrete Actions

Earning Travelife certification is not an end in itself, but rather the result of a collective effort structured around several concrete areas of focus that involve our travelers, our partners, and our team.

  1. For our travelers

  • Awareness and education at the destination: creation of resources dedicated to best practices to follow in Costa Rica, available on our website and provided to each traveler prior to their trip.
  • Promoting responsible suppliers: directly incorporating clear information into quotes to help identify committed service providers and their best practices.
  • Support for positive-impact travel: promotion of local experiences and community initiatives, while optimizing travel distances and prioritizing sustainable transportation.
  • Voluntary carbon offsetting: providing a tool to estimate thetrip’s carbon footprint and offering customers the option to offset their emissions.

2. For our partners and suppliers

  • Collaboration and mutual learning: organizing meetings and training sessions to deepen our understanding of sustainability issues specific to Costa Rica (proper behavior in national parks, how wildlife refuges operate, etc.).
  • Ethical selection: implementation of a supplier charter to guide our partnerships and a commitment to giving greater visibility to small local organizations, NGOs, and community projects.
  • Ongoing evaluation: Selection and regular monitoring of service providers based on criteria of quality and social and environmental responsibility (CSR).
  • Implementation of a donation system in which $10 per traveler is donated to an organization; in 2024 and 2025, this was Raising Coral, which works to restore and protect Costa Rica’s coral reefs.

3. In our internal management

  • Structuring and formalizing our commitments: developing our internal policies (HR policy, sustainability policy, code of ethics, internal charter).
  • Training and engagement of the team: regular participation in training sessions, conferences, and roundtables on sustainability and responsible tourism within the Terra Panamerica Group .
  • Reducing and offsetting our carbon footprint: implementing best practices in the office (reducing paper use, recycling, energy efficiency, responsible purchasing) and offsetting our emissions through financial contributions to social development and environmental conservation projects with FONAFIFO.
  • Organizing volunteer activities within the team in partnership with a committed Costa Rican organization.
  • A tangible impact that is measured differently internally: the certification has strengthened our team’s pride, given greater meaning to our daily actions, encouraged more in-depth research on environmental and social issues, and strengthened ties with our partners through a more constructive and collaborative dialogue.

What This Means for Our Travelers

For our travelers, Travelifecertification is much more than just a formal recognition like our other certifications: it’s a guarantee of a trip that’s been carefully and responsibly designed. Each itinerary we offer is designed to support local stakeholders, preserve ecosystems, and provide an authentic experience that brings you closer to Costa Rican culture and nature. Choosing Terra Caribea also means actively participating in a model of tourism that respects nature and local communities, while promoting positive benefits and minimizing negative impacts on the region.

What happens next?

At Terra Caribea, we view this Travelife certification as a milestone on a path of continuous improvement, because sustainability is never a given— it must be nurtured, adapted, and strengthened day by day.

The regular renewal of our certification drives us to maintain high standards and constantly rethink our practices, both internally and in collaboration with our partners and travelers. Our ambition remains the same: to make every trip a positive force for change, and to make Terra Caribea a company committed to protecting Costa Rica and the well-being of its people.
