My Surfing Getaway in Costa Rica

The Passion for Surfing in Costa Rica

It’s no secret that surfing in Costa Rica is well-known among surf enthusiasts around the world. As someone who’s been passionate about surfing since childhood, Costa Rica—a land of sports and nature—is a natural choice for me.

These spots attract surfers from all corners of the globe, thanks to consistent waves year-round and the wide variety of spots throughout the country. In fact, beach breaks, reef breaks, and point breaks are all here!

The Pacific and Caribbean coasts take center stage all year round

Dream waves and idyllic landscapes (even more so during late-afternoon sessions with the sunsets)—that’s what awaits you if you come to discover Costa Rica’s waves on your next surf trip.

Exceptional conditions for surfing in Costa Rica

Another thing I really love about Costa Rica is the country’s natural beauty. The combination of surfing and the jungle offers a much-appreciated escape and a unique connection to nature—parrots, monkeys, sloths, and toucans may appear near the beaches, making the experience even more magical and memorable.
What’s more, the marine environment is home to many species you might encounter during a surf session: I’ve been lucky enough to spot stingrays and sea turtles while surfing.

The atmosphere within Costa Rica’s small surfing community is also very pleasant!

You can really feelthe “Pura Vida” spiriteven in the water! If you’re respectful of the environment at the spot and the locals in the lineup, you’ll experience this“Pura Vida” way of lifethrough both the kindness of the people there and the authentic atmosphere.

MY FAVORITE SPOTS

Playa Hermosa

Located just 5 minutes from Jaco, this beach break is my favorite spot in Costa Rica. It’s easily accessible by car from the capital and is also very popular with local surfers—you might even run into Costa Rican legends like the Muñoz brothers there! Plus, the sunsets are stunning, and the atmosphere really comes alive as soon as night falls!

Pavones

It’s a legendary spot in the surfing world; for those in the know, it’s the second-longest left-hand wave in the world, located deep in the jungle just a few kilometers from Corcovado National Park.
When southern swells roll in (usually starting in March or April), Pavones offers a world-class wave and memories that will stay with the lucky few who get to surf it forever.

Puerto Viejo (Salsa Brava, Playa Cocles)

Puerto Viejo is a well-known surfing spot on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica during the peak seasons (December through March and July–August).
In fact, when the Caribbean swells pick up, you’ll find powerful, high-level waves perfect for experienced surfers.
Plus, the small town of Puerto Viejo is very charming—a local vibe is guaranteed!

Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is known for its surf- and yoga-retreat-centered vibe; you’ll find a relaxing atmosphere there that’s also very surf-oriented. The best surf spots are Playa Carmen, Playa Santa Teresa, and Playa Hermosa.

You’ll also enjoy the stunning scenery!

In short, Costa Rica is home to many surf spots that are great year-round. If you want to enjoy paradise-like beaches and sessions in 28-degree water, this is the perfect destination for your next surf trip!
