Monteverde and the Gulf of Nicoya

Cloud forest and coastal gulf

Perched on the Tilarán mountains around 1,440 metres, Monteverde is home to one of the most famous cloud forests in Costa Rica. Mist drifts through the trees for much of the day, feeding a dense tangle of orchids, ferns and mosses, and sheltering the resplendent quetzal. The Monteverde Biological Reserve, created in 1972 by Quaker settlers and scientists, protects around 10,500 hectares alongside the quieter, community-run Santa Elena reserve. Beyond birdwatching, the region is a hub for canopy tours, with ziplines, hanging bridges and aerial trams. To the west, the land drops toward the Gulf of Nicoya, its mangroves, fishing villages and the birding wetlands of Palo Verde National Park. The area combines wildlife, adventure and community tourism within a compact area.
