Tortuguero and the Caribbean
Jungle, canals and Caribbean culture
The northern Caribbean coast is a maze of jungle and freshwater canals reached only by boat or small plane, which gives Tortuguero its remote, end-of-the-road feel. The forest presses right up to the water, and the canals are the roads: you explore by boat, gliding past caimans, monkeys, sloths and dozens of water birds. Tortuguero National Park is one of the most important green turtle nesting sites in the western Caribbean. Further south, the coast opens onto beaches, coral reefs and the Afro-Caribbean culture of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, with its own rhythm, food and Creole heritage. The climate is warm and humid year-round, and rain can fall in any season.
