Nature and Culture Tour
from Panama to Costa Rica

A combined tour of Costa Rica and Panama lasting about 20 days

This combined tour connects Panama and Costa Rica over 19 days, from the Panama Canal to the beaches of Guanacaste. It takes you through Panama City and its Casco Antiguo, an encounter with the Emberá community, the Pacific coast at Boca Chica, the coffee-growing highlands of Boquete, the Caribbean archipelago of Bocas del Toro, and then, on the Costa Rican side, Puerto Viejo, Sarapiquí, the Rio Celeste in Tenorio, and Guanacaste. A nature- and culture-focused itinerary that can be customized from 15 to 21 days, entirely private.

Rather than choosing between Panama and Costa Rica, discover both: Panama’s rich history and urban charm, and Costa Rica’s natural beauty and biodiversity.

In Panama, you’ll trace a significant chapter of the region’s history: the Panama Canal and its locks, the historic districts of Panama City—including Casco Antiguo—and the ruins of Panamá La Vieja, the country’s first capital. Then the journey shifts to a more off-the-beaten-path side of Panama, from the Pacific coast at Boca Chica to the coffee-growing highlands of Boquete and the Caribbean archipelago of Bocas del Toro.

In Costa Rica, you’ll cross the country from the Caribbean to the Pacific, encountering both people and wildlife along the way: the Afro-Caribbean culture of Puerto Viejo, the plains and rafting of Sarapiquí, the turquoise Rio Celeste in Tenorio National Park, and finally the beaches of Guanacaste, among the most beautiful in Costa Rica.

A Panama-Costa Rica trip that combines cultural and natural heritage, suitable for families and couples alike. This private, tailor-made tour can be customized to last between 15 and 21 days, depending on your preferences and travel dates.

Length of stay: 19 days

Theme: Multi-country tours

Difficulty: For all audiences

This itinerary is the one I recommend to anyone who’s torn between Panama and Costa Rica: instead of choosing one, you get the best of both. What I love about this kind of trip is the contrast. You start with the city, the canal, and the colonial history of Panama City, then scale things back a bit at each stop, until you end up with your feet in the sand in Guanacaste. The itinerary flows logically, without any unnecessary back-and-forth. For many of our travelers, the day spent with the Emberá people on the Chagres River remains the most memorable part of the trip: the canoe ride, the warm welcome from the village, and the meal served on banana leaves. On the nature front, the Rio Celeste and its surreal blue always leave a lasting impression, and Bocas del Toro offers a Caribbean getaway you won’t find on this side of Costa Rica. My advice: don’t underestimate the border crossing at Sixaola. When traveling independently, this is often the most tiring part of the trip. We organize it with transfers on both sides, so all you have to do is cross the bridge. And remember to check your passport’s validity: Panama requires six months remaining, which is stricter than Costa Rica’s requirement. We always base our planning on that rule.
