Why is Costa Rica the ideal destination for French retirees?
Costa Rica, the jewel of Central America, attracts many French retirees every year, whether they’re traveling as a couple or with a group of friends. This small country, with its breathtaking landscapes, exceptional biodiversity, and welcoming culture, stands out as the perfect destination for an adventure that is both enriching and peaceful.
Who are these French retirees who choose Costa Rica?
French retirees who move to Costa Rica often have one thing in common: a desire to explore the world while enjoying a certain peace and quiet. They are generally couples or groups of friends who are passionate about nature, culture, and authentic experiences. Some are seeking to fulfill a childhood dream, while others simply want to disconnect from their daily lives to reconnect with nature. For many, traveling to Costa Rica is also an opportunity to treat themselves to a tropical adventure without straying too far from their usual comforts.
These are often couples who have already traveled to several destinations around the world and are looking for a new destination with good connections to Paris. The direct flight between Paris and San José, which operates more than three times a week, is a real plus for them. It’s also worth noting that our sixty-somethings have more flexibility in their travel dates, and since Costa Rica can be visited year-round, they can easily travel outside of peak tourist seasons, allowing us to tailor the travel period to each person’s preferences and travel style. That’s our role as travel designers. Some, for example, are passionate birdwatchers who are determined to see the quetzal. It’s up to us to recommend the best time of year and the most suitable stops for this experience.
Why is Costa Rica at the top of their list?
Costa Rica checks all the boxes for these travelers. Among the main reasons for this popularity are:
- Incredible biodiversity: Costa Rica is home to 6% of the world’s biodiversity, with protected national parks, idyllic beaches, and impressive wildlife. Seeing toucans, sloths, and even giant tortoises in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience.
- A pleasant climate: Mild temperatures and a tropical climate make Costa Rica a popular destination year-round.
- A relaxing lifestyle: The concept of “Pura Vida”—a local philosophy of life that values simplicity, well-being, and gratitude—resonates particularly well with retirees.
- Well-developed infrastructure: Although Costa Rica is a small country, it boasts high-quality tourism infrastructure and an efficient healthcare system. These factors put many travelers at ease. (See the article “A Country Without an Army”)
- Charming locals: The “Ticos” are known for being among the most welcoming people in the world, with a constant curiosity about others and their cultures. Genuineinteractions with locals are highly appreciated by travelers.
A popular and multifaceted destination
Traveling to Costa Rica isn’t for everyone. Budget can be a natural barrier, since the cost of living is quite high. It’s no coincidence that the country is called the “Little Switzerland of Central America.” This is due in part to the overall sense of safety throughout the country, as well as its high standards of education and healthcare. For locals, the country is expensive, and tourists certainly feel that too.
Local tourist services (hotels, activities, national park entrance fees, etc.) and international flights represent a significant investment. Tourists know that this destination is more expensive than neighboring countries, but they’ll find comfort and high-quality services here. The country is home to numerous eco-lodges—a hallmark of the destination—which are typically small establishments with 3 to 10 rooms, nestled in nature and environmentally responsible. We always prefer these options, which are appreciated for their charm and differ greatly from European hotels.
Transportation is another factor that helps win these travelers over. For the more adventurous, it’s possible to safely cross the country in a 4×4 to reach the destination’s remote corners. For others, vacation means peace and quiet, and they’ll appreciate the convenienceof private transportation —or better yet,a local English-speaking guide-driver who can tailor the trip to their companions’ preferences.
With its small size, Costa Rica offers a diverse adventure in just 15 days. Retirees can go from a volcano surrounded by nature to tropical beaches on the Pacific or Caribbean coasts, all while exploring the Monteverde Cloud Forest and the wild plains of Guanacaste. This wealth of experiences makes Costa Rica an ideal destination for a trip full of discoveries.
A memorable trip for grandparents and their grandchildren
