It’s the perfect opportunity to discover the country’s many facets, from stunning beaches like Manuel Antonio and Tambor to exceptional natural sites such as Palo Verdeand more mountainous regions like Tenorio and Poás.
The advantage of this itinerary is that it offers a comprehensive exploration of Costa Rica through a seamless and accessible self-drive loop, perfectly suited to a 16-day trip to Costa Rica.

You’ll start your day by picking up your rental car.
Drive from San José to Manuel Antonio.
Departure for Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Weather permitting, you’ll have the chance to spot crocodiles on the Tarcoles River before reaching Manuel Antonio, a beautiful park named after a Spanish conquistador. The region is also a hotspot for sport fishing and palm oil production.
You can also choose to visit Carara National Park, which, although fairly small (52 km²), boasts one of the country’s greatest levels of biodiversity. The birdlife there is spectacular, particularly the scarlet macaws, which migrate twice a day between the forest and the nearby coastal mangroves.

Parrita - Tambor
Route from Parrita to Tambor.
Today, you’ll leave the central Pacific coast and Parrita to head to the southern part of the beautiful Nicoya Peninsula, near Tambor.

Note: You’ll take the ferry from Paquera to Puntarenas (payable on site).

Curu National Refuge
Guided Kayaking and Hiking in the Curú Reserve
This excursion combines two activities into one day: a nature hike through the Curú Nature Reserve and a kayaking trip to one of the region’s most beautiful and pristine beaches.
The day begins with a 20-minute kayak ride from Curú Beach to Quesera Beach, where you can swim in the turquoise waters. We provide fruit and drinks so you can relax on the sand while enjoying fresh fruit.
The adventure continues with a return to Curú after spending two hours at Quesera Beach. You’ll arrive at the Curú administrative area just in time to enjoy a casado — a typical Costa Rican meal. After lunch, you’ll begin a 90-minute hike along Curú’s nature trails.

Bioluminescence Phenomenon
Much more than just a nighttime boat tour, this excursion is an incredible interactive experience.
At 5:00 p.m., you’ll set off by boat from the peaceful Curú Beach, a haven where you can spot many animals.
You’ll reach Playa Blanca, a beautiful white-sand beach located about 3 km away (a 20-minute boat ride). You’ll wait for nightfall while enjoying fresh fruit on the beach, then set sail again for the real experience.
In the darkness, you’ll watch the water glow and shimmer—and you’ll even have the chance to go for a swim!

Tambor - Palo Verde
The road from Tambor to Palo Verde.
You’ll travel to Palo Verde through the interior of the Nicoya Peninsula.
Palo Verde National Park is an exceptional natural site home to a rich biodiversity, particularly of birds, which seek refuge in this vast ecosystem that combines wetlands and tropical forests.

You’ll set out from your lodge in a Land Rover 4×4 for an adventure through kilometers of wetlands teeming with wildlife. Hundreds of waterbirds live and feed in these fertile lands.
Keep your eyes peeled for the African Spoonbill, the American Tantalus,the Striped Onoré,the American Aningha, the Vigua Cormorant, the Mexican Jacana, the African Jabiru (the largest waterbird in the Americas, which is on the brink of extinction), and many more!

Boat Tour on the Rio Tempisque
You’ll set out on a boat tour along the Rio Tempisque, which borders Palo Verde National Park.
The park protects more than 18,410 hectares of land, much of which is flooded during the rainy season, creating marshy areas ideal for the passage and extended stay of various bird species.
You ’ll cruise along the Rio Tempisque, a famous river that separates Guanacaste from the rest of the country, following the banks in search of the various bird species that live there. You’ll also have the opportunity to see crocodiles, iguanas, monkeys, and other animals living in Palo Verde National Park.

Palo Verde - Tenorio
From Palo Verde to Tenorio
Departure toward the Tenorio Volcano region, whose national park is home to the famous Rio Celeste.

Tenorio - Poás
Route from Tenorio to Poás.
Departure for the Poás Volcano region. Along the way, you’ll pass through Orotina and San Mateo before reaching Vara Blanca, a village located near the Poás Volcano.

Poás National Park
You will visit Poás Volcano National Park, which, with a diameter of 1.6 km and a depth of 300 meters, is renowned for having one of the largest active craters in the world.
Then, visit the small volcanology center and the national park. A spacious terrace offers a breathtaking view of a caldera (collapsed crater) from which sulfurous fumaroles rise.

Visit to a Strawberry Farm
Accompanied by your certified guide—an expert in strawberries and local agriculture—you’ll have the opportunity to visit a strawberry farm where you’ll learn about the history and production of this well-known fruit, after sampling delicious strawberry juice and freshly picked strawberries. You’ll venture along the farm’s trails, then enjoy a pleasant ride in a traditional oxcart, learning about its history and legends. You’ll also have the chance to learn more about the fascinating practice of patotherapy…
